FOMO Thai @ Melbourne

When I first heard that Melbourne has a wide variety of eateries in terms of the different kind of cuisine(s) they have, I couldn't believe a single word of it....not until I experienced it myself.

I stayed in Melbourne for 3 years and everything changed my perspective of Melbourne itself(especially the eateries). As a person who loves Thai cuisine, a person whom doesn't mind just having Thai food everyday.. Melbourne's Thai food hits that notch on my "tasty-buds" journey. I know probably a number of you readers would probably wonder.."What?! Melbourne?! Thai?! You've got to be kidding." No, fellow readers! I'm not kidding at all! Melbourne do have great Thai food cooked by the native Thai themselves.

FOMO Thai is a fairly new Thai restaurant in Melbourne as compared to other Thai restaurants like YingThai or Thai on Elizabeth Street. I did not even stumble upon FOMO, it was recommended by my Thai friend who is living in Melbourne..

FOMO serves the most classic Thai food, some are actually street food in Thailand but priced highly expensive here in Melbourne.

Thai Fish Cake

As usual, Thai Fish Cake is always a must-try in every Thai restaurant. The Thai Fish Cake here speaks the word "slurps" when it lingers in your mouth. That succulent fish cake taste, with a punch from the Thai sweet chili, and the cooling sensation from the cubes of cucumber...what more could you ask for? Besides that, I noticed the fish cakes here are fried together with pieces of basil and a few curry leaves(I guess?). Whatever it is, it tastes so good that I'm not even exaggerating.

Thai Green Curry

So in Malaysia, we always have our Thai Green Curry with either Chicken/Pork/Beef. But have you ever tasted the pure Thai Green Curry that they serve in Thailand itself? Well, this restaurant does it just as well. Apparently, the Thai Green Curry in Thailand is cooked not with Chicken/Pork/Beef, but with home-made fish paste or some sort like fish paste. It was something different to me and it opened my eyes to great variety in Thai food. This dish is really good(but do bear in mind that it is spicy)

Deep fried fish with peppercorn and basil

"Yums!" That is the first thing that comes to my mind when I ate this dish. It's so delicious that even words won't be enough to describe it. You have to try to know it.

Squid/Cuttlefish with Salted Egg

When I saw this in the menu and my Thai friend said it's a must-try.. I thought to myself.."Isn't this the same as probably the ones we get in Malaysia? Like those deep fried squid with salted egg?". Then, when the dish came, it came to a surprise that the way it's cooked in Thailand is different than in Malaysia. I prefer the ones in Malaysia than this. But it's different, just ordinary to me.
Crying Tiger

To those that are familiar with Thai food, will probably know this dish as a street food in Thailand. I've only been to Thailand once when I was a kid, so I do not remember seeing this as a street food. However, my Thai friend said it was a street food in Thailand but he claims the one here in FOMO is way better. Firstly, the name of the dish speaks for itself. It's so tasty and juicy that it will leave you in tears. The beef especially is so tender that it melts in your mouth(YAY to Aussie for having great breed of cows).

Deep fried fish with soy sauce

This was way too salty for me. Not to my liking. I have tried better deep fried fish with soy sauce, here in Malaysia.

Pork Knuckle

Yet another street food in Thailand. It's exactly like our pork knuckle here in Malaysia or somewhat calls it "Siew Yok" in Cantonese. The only difference is the sauce that they provide as a dipping condiment for the knuckles. Ordinary to me.. I would rather order two Crying Tiger instead of this.
You are probably lured by all the food pictures above, but do save some money before you walk into this restaurant.. it is pricey( for those that are earning Malaysian ringgit). As for someone who is earning Australian, it would be moderate pricing. The food here starts from the price of $20 (Australian dollar).

But if you do visit Melbourne, Australia, this is a must-try place. :)

Steven's Chicken Chop @ Damansara Uptown

Since young, I have been patronizing the same shop whenever I have the "chicken chop" cravings. It's not in a restaurant, nor in a shop lot, but it's in an open food court situated in Damansara Uptown. I remember those days where a plate of a sinful chicken chop would cost RM6.50 but right now, that same plate of chicken chop costs RM12/RM13. Fred not, it is still a satisfying plate of chicken chop. Besides chicken chop, they do sell grilled chicken, lamb, and beef. All I can say is that if you have not try this out, you MUST. The only down side to it is that : - the environment is filled with mosquito. I wouldn't mind (as the food do come quickly), but to those that mind, perhaps you could pack the food back home. But do bear in mind, if you choose to pack it back home, it may be soggy. Directions to the place :- 1. Head to Damansara Uptown (if you have no idea where that is, popular shops such as Village Park Nasi Lemak, Every Sundae, A Pie Thing, Damansar

Ekkamai @ Jalan Batai, Damansara Heights

When Thai food is not done right, it would taste bland; When Thai food is done right, your taste would bend. But thankfully for Ekkamai @ Batai, they did Thai food justice! My first experience in Ekkamai was at the Publika branch and it wasn't a pleasant dining experience as I felt the food lacks the flavours and one of the soup had a bad smell to it (Tom Kha Salmon Belly, to be exact). At this point, I told myself to not walk into the one in Publika anymore, and give the one at Batai a chance. Stumbled upon the branch at Batai, and why not? Did not regret it, food was delightful, ambiance was just perfect for a group dining, or even a romantic couple dining experience. Only down-side is the parking at Batai (a 4 hours catching up with friends, could costs you about RM15 just for the parking). Enough said, food pics! Sharing Platter ✭✭✭✰✰  The sharing platter is a good combination of several starters. Do note that this would just be enough for 2-3 person. The pand

Chuai Heng Restaurant @ Kuala Lumpur

Apologies for the lack or rather the sudden disappearance from this blog. Fred not, I am back here with a brand new post. This time, it's a restaurant that has been in the city centre for quite a long time. I remembered having the dim sum here few years back, and it was alright. Thus, having friends down in KL from overseas, whom were craving for Dim Sum.. first thing that came to my mind was Chuai Heng Restaurant. Reason why I chose this place is that the environment is great and peaceful for a great catch-up and chit chat session. :) Chuai Heng is, of course the more "high-class" place for Dim Sum, probably comparable to places like Dai Thong or Overseas Restaurant or Oriental Pavillion. It's tucked in Bukit Bintang, pretty close to Prince Court Hospital.. roughly about a minute or two from Prince Court Hospital. Steamed Peanut  As usual, in places like these, they will always serve a saucer of steamed peanuts. Of course, is to be noted that there is no suc
